Tick -Tock

If you have any inflammatory bowel condition your colon could be running out of time. Every time you eat your digestive acids take a bite out of your intestinal wall.The 1st sign that you are losing the battle is with IBS and diarrhea. As the damage gets deeper you get colitis and that outrageous urgent ongoing diarrhea and as you cruise down the IBD hell highway you start to notice blood on the road—in your stools & just around the bend you see a detour sign saying warning– crohn’s just around the corner. If you have IBD – it’s inevitable– as long as you keep eating breakfast-lunch and dinner the erosion will continue. The clock is ticking— you only have so much colon tissue left. Don’t just sit there (on the toilet?) Do something!

Inflammatory Bowel Diseases are not natural

All these conditions, IBS- Colitis-UC-Crohn’s, are not diseases.  They are not syndromes you cannot “catch” them– they are not caused by stress, poor diet or nsaids. They are not auto-immune diseases, where the immune system just decides to attack us. Why would it decide to do that now only in the last 40 years or so.  Nobody had IBD’s before then! All of the above is such shallow thinking.

A quick note about genetics. You do not inherit IBD directly, let me explain. What some people do inherit is a tendency to a weakness in some bodily system—think diabetes.  Now those weaknesses, in most cases will lie dormant until some “stressor” influences them to become active. In the case of diabetes obesity and poor diet equals stress on the pancreas. In the case of any IBD, the stressor is the use of antibiotics that impacts the mucosal lining exposing the GI membrane wall to your digestive acids and fibrous foods  irritating and eroding the tissue causing symptoms like diarrhea. If left unattended this will eventually manifest with rectal bleeding and mucus in the stool. As for genetics, this explains why your neighbor takes antibiotics and at least initially seems no worse for the wear and as for you, you are in the bathroom all day.

Bottom line, your genetic weakness would have never shown up without the “stressor” antibiotics. Another example, non steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs like aspirin. The aspirin can only irritate the GI tissue if it can make direct contact with it-which can only happen if you don’t have sufficient mucosal lining which can only happen if you bumped into something anti-bacterial– get it? INFLAMMATORY BOWEL (NOT) DISEASE (IBND) IS MANMADE! And guess what—it can be man “unmade.” Just “reverse engineer” it. That’s how I figured this out— followed the trail all the way back to the mammalian breast and the nursing process.  Don’t take my word for it -go out into the woods and talk to some squirrels or raccoons and ask if any of them have IBS ect. They will tell you- “hell no–that stuff is manmade! We don’t need any forest pharmacies– we are all breast fed!”

 

 

 

SIBO

I was just asked a great question by one of my clients about SIBO. “I read online that if I take probiotics it will increase my symptoms–mostly gas– so why would I want to take more bacteria?”  My 1st response was to “stay off the internet!” Secondarily- “yes-hallelujah we should certainly hope so–we want that.” That is a very good sign. Why? It is because the live probiotic probiotic bacteria– will go into the small bowel-small intestine and ferment-”eat” the bad guys and as this happens they give off gases-which can also cause bloating. This is a good thing and it is temporary. So– what people mistakenly do is to stop taking the probiotic. As a matter of fact -if you have SIBO and this does not happen-then you should go get another probiotic and make sure it is one that needs to be refrigerated. The only exception to that is soil based probiotics—- which BTW-will not give permanent relief from any GI problem–as the are transient—- not residential and come and go -just giving some benefit for the day and not necessarily to the gut. So– if you have SIBO–do this–get a good probiotic— take it and hopefully get a temporary exacerbation of your symptoms and—– stay off the internet!

Question—how do u explain IBS in someone who never took antibiotics?

That would mean that they never ate food-drank water- bathed- swam in a pool-were expose to household cleaners—as there are
antibiotics/chlorine in all of them. Or–they never took any over the counter medications – including any for acne – birth control- drank alcohol or had stress. Or that they were not breast fed by their mother or the mucosal lining did not “take hold.”
If they did not do any of those then it does not matter-it is not important that we can explain how we got it— we just fix it.
If someone is hung up on the how—they will never act and therefore will never be healed. Ultimately– who cares how we got it-because we know how to fix it!

Probiotics 2.0

There is so much great stuff happening in the probiotics world— between research and product development. So—here is a short version of what could be important to you.
We all know about the common strains of bacteria that we see on the bottles of probiotics that we have in our refrigerators– such as lactbacillus and bifidus ect. Those are yesterday’s probiotics–you need to get hip and I am going to help you do so.

In view of what you will see below perhaps they will develop a “hip” strain of bacteria. But what you should know is that not all of these strains are created equal.There are companies that are now growing these same strains with different-more specialized “information” in them- educated to do different jobs in our body.This is not unnatural-it is similar to breeding -such as in dogs and horses and rabbits.In laboratories– scientists are “introducing” different strains of bacterias to each other— they then go on a date and in several (9?) months all of a sudden we have a very talented baby bacteria. Some of these new strains are more effective for things such as diarrhea-gas-food allergies and even lowering cholesterol.

The Cliff Notes version of how this works is that the highly intelligent bacteria identifies the molecular structure of whatever crosses it’s path- whatever that happens to be– a food-a germ–cancer cells- scar tissue-some kind of genetic issue— it jumps in and rearranges the molecular structure— always for the best.
There is lots & lots to be said about this and will be said on this blog later- so keep checking in now and then-for the next installment-as my “hip” bacterias kick in.This has endless-spectacular application— and in fact is the new— (actually ancient) frontier and was available for all of us intrinsically until we wiped the “hard drive of our physiology clean with— antibiotics and our body forgot how to do this and these bacterias got thrown off the track of their-our evolution. Now— it is back and available for you to take take advantage of and to restart your personal evolution.
Sorry about that— I know -too much information-must be those enthusiastic strains I have been chugging. I will try to contain myself. How may this apply to you? Here is an example. If you have a wheat/gluten allergy/intolerance— what you really have is a lack of the intelligent bacteria in charge of identifying and processing the gluten molecule. That’s right folks– that’s what you have been calling celiac. Your digestive system has been dumbed down by antibiotics.I can hear you now-”it must be hereditary–my mother- my child and me ect ect”— wrong- what you inherited is a society/environment saturated with antibiotics— wiping the intelligence out of your cells so they have forgotten how to do their job.Tell me– does avoiding wheat/dairy-whatever fix anything?

The non-evolved way of dealing with this is to surrender to misinformation and live a life of exclusion.Lack of the bacterial intelligence in the brain cells makes us susceptible to this bull shit.You out to start hanging out with people who have loaded their brains up with anti bull shit software. No one had gluten/lactose intolerance prior to world war 2— when they started handing antibiotics out like candy- wiping out their hard drive.
Here’s another one— does it seem like everyone is getting fat and no matter what they do can’t lose weight? That’s right– there is a bacterial strain for that. Modern science has done nothing but re-discovered ancient science.There is so much here folks— endless application.
Lastly– for now-this is another key–the probiotic that you use should not only mimic the bacterial profile in breast milk—- it should actually be from breast milk– human commensal bacteria.Think about this – is there a connection to a child being breast fed and then it’s cells know just what to do to grow and be healthy and not need antibiotics and those that are not nursed and tend to not thrive? Hmmm.

Check out-human commensal bacteria-this will be the 1st step in jump starting your evolution. I know I said just several posts ago that I never refer to any products by name– but check out Pharmax Probiotics. I have no connection to this company–I just know they are cool and that they are leading the way for this technolology.It is funny-I was telling a friend the other day how when I was younger I used to get excited about hot young chicks— now I get excited about hot young bacteria–is there something wrong with me? These guys are heavy and with the proper guidance you can re-educate every cell in your body–very cool stuff. Stay tuned— as I keep feeding my own head and just may have some good new evolved stuff to share as we go along.

What Foods to Eat for IBS

I get asked this question 6-7 times a day and very often it’s the same person asking for the 2nd -3rd time. Perhaps this is because of the way I answer it. “If you have ANY inflammatory bowel condition-IBS-Colitis -UC- Crohn’s Disease or Diverticulitis- you should eat a low fiber diet– no raw vegs-no raw fruit-no nuts -no seeds -no corn.” The only caveat to this is if there is some other food that causes a problem- then we put that one aside and like the rest we will get back to it later. When one is treated properly for any IBD-including the notorious Leaky Gut Syndrome-(poor guy– he get’s blamed for everything.) we should then be able to consume that food w/o any problems. If the person you are dealing with can’t do that– then go to someone else.  In my next post I will have more interesting stuff to say about Leaky Gut— with a personal challenge from me to you-which will give you some insight into human nature. The corollary to this would be that anything else is fair game. Yes—- that means things like meat-fish-poultry-eggs——anything that is not rough-crunchy. My favorite one which I am consistently asked— “Can I eat Doritos?” I don’t even answer that.  Why low fiber? This is because your bowel is already irritated and we don’t need to be dragging rough stuff over it. Just doing this-although definitely not a cure– will dramatically reduce or minimize diarrhea. But don’t be fooled into thinking that means you are healed. It’s a 2 step process. 1. Stop irritating the tissue. 2. Start ingesting substances that will rebuild and protect the tissue– what I call putting humpty-dumpty back together again. So-as I often do I have an assignment for you-especially if you do not want to pay me money to fix your colon. Go online– google “what are mucous membranes?”— figure out why there are 2 words here -then figure out what they are made of and put that stuff in your mouth. Meanwhile— put that Tostito down and let your fingers do the walking.

There are Probiotics and then there are——–

Folks—- Please know this— there are probiotics and then there are probiotics.Not all probiotics are created equal -especially the man-made ones.Probiotics are by far the most important substance that you can put into your body. That is why mother nature makes sure they are the very 1st thing that we ingest—- from mothers milk. This is not something that mankind in some laboratory can reproduce. You cannot just slap together a bunch of beneficial bacterial strains-because they look good-which is what most every supplement manufacturer does.Some of these companies are playing bacterial gymnastics.It just doesn’t make sense— although it does make LOT’S of money– because most everyone is taking probiotics these days.Don’t worry-these crazy combos will not hurt you–it is just that they will not help you. Please- Do NOT buy your probiotics at Walmart or CVS or your hairdresser or from the back of someones trunk of their car.I mean everyone is getting into the act. I have to laugh that now -after many years of trying to drive us naturopathic doctors out of business that your local doctor is now getting into the act.All of a sudden every MD is a Holistic Doctor-overnight. What the hell is that all about? Imagine— on one hand prescribing antibiotics and the next visit-when you complain about your stomach hurting-you are nauseous-projectile vomiting (how ya like that one?) or you have explosive diarrhea- he tries to sell you some probiotics. Is that a “Hypocritic” Oath they take? Sorry- I just couldn’t resist taking a shot at the phonies who pull that greedy b/s.
So anyways– what probiotic should you take?The best choice by far is to take one that in modeled on the exact profile of the strains in human breast milk. This way you are not relying on some guy trying to piece together what HE thinks is better. In fact there are probiotics on the market that ARE MADE FROM HUMAN BREAST MILK-not just similar to.YOU CANNOT DO BETTER THAN THIS! Do your homework– track down human commensal bacteria— that’s the real deal.Or another alternative is to track down a lactating woman and see if you can cut a deal with her. Don’t laugh-it is done everyday.
Lastly– for now– 2 other probiotic rules—- always take colostrum with probiotics -again-maybe if you catch her early-like in the 1st 6 hours- she will give you a deal-2 for the price of one. NEVER -EVER BUY THE B/S THAT PROBIOTICS DO NOT NEED TO BE REFRIGERATED.You will only hear that from someone who a. does not know what they are talking about b.they are trying to SELL you some b/s. You NEVER see me trying to sell you any brand name of any supplement-I just give you the basics and let you track the stuff down.
*Last 2 comments about this non refrigeration thing— 1. What they really mean is that their probiotics “break down” slower (maybe) than the others. If something won’t break down-spoil-then it must be dead and a dead probiotic is just powder and that is what most of you have been taking and explains why to are still sick.2.What they do is pack “extra” amounts in the bottle-beyond what it says on the label— so hopefully by the time you get it -it still has some in it.But—the clock is still ticking— these tricky guys.
Lastly– to help you people who are stressed out about taking your probiotics on the road with you—- or worry about when they are shipped to you. Probiotics are not so perishable that they will die when not refrigerated for a few days–as long as they are not exposed to direct sunlight or heat. Just pop them in the refrig when you arrive to your destination. You can also tell a company who is really on the ball- they ship the probiotic with dry ice paks—- just in case—and so that you don’t freak out.
Just thought you might want to know.

Fight for your Bowel Rights!

It is your right to establish the conditions of a perfectly functioning bowel. You need to create a new normal. Go back to your roots.Don’t settle for less!This is what our forefathers fought so hard for! Stand up for your bowel rights! There should be a constitutional amendment-freedom of bowel expression! Bowel Emancipation for all! All bowels were created equal!Don’t take this sitting down!
This can be a challenge to achieve— but once you get it-if you follow the golden rule of bowel health– you will never lose it.
First of all- what is NOT normal/healthy—although many of you who have been living this way assume is.
It is not normal/healthy to live with-
Gas
Bloating
Cramps
Nausea
Diarrhea
Constipation
Mucus or Blood in the stool
Frequent Vomiting.
Food Allergies/Intolerances.
Heartburn.
If you experience any of these and think they are normal— then you are not alone. Often times when doctors are confronted with some of these symptoms of Inflammatory Bowel Disease by their patients and after subsequent tests that show negative— they are told there is nothing wrong– “it’s normal -don’t worry about it.” Easy to say when it’s not their colon.
These symptoms ARE normal if you have IBS-Colitis-UC-Crohn’s-Diverticulitis or Leaky Gut Syndrome. These conditions are so prevalent in our society that we have come to believe that they are normal– just the way bowels work – it is what it is. Wrong! Most of these conditions did not exist before World War 2 and the ones that did were not so common in frequency and severity and tended to be temporary events due to something we did to ourselves like- overindulge in food or alcohol. Then the simple solution was-plop-plop-fizz-fizz.You know something is wrong when everyone is walking around with the purple pill-Imodium or Miralax in their back pocket! Is that normal? Maybe in your household– not mine.
Ok– that’s enough about what is “normal” in our society- but now let’s talk about the real normal- the way it’s supposed to be— the way the bowel wants it– the way you want it.
This should be your and your bowel’s goal.
It is really very simple-
3 Meals a day = 3 bowel movements per day.
If less than that you are constipated-if more you have an inflammatory bowel condition.
This should be at predictable times preferably within 15 minutes after eating.
In and out– if you are in the bathroom more that 5 minutes something is wrong.
Don’t worry about size -shape -floating -color ect—- just seek the above.

Once you have achieved this state of bowel perfection it is very hard to lose—as long as you follow the golden bowel rule——.
Please take this bowel pledge with me–if you are really sincere about triumphing over your bowel dysfunction you will literally doe this EXACTLY the way I exhort you to.
Ok-put your left hand on your role of charmin toilet paper and raise your right hand and repeat after me-”I MR/MS messed up bowel person-do solemly swear that whenever I take antibiotics that I will immediately follow that up with probiotics- for at least 30 days and I do understand that with failure to do so I will be sentenced to at least 30 days of solitary confinement in the bathroom—so help me the bowel gods.” To follow these simple instructions is to reserve yourself a spot in the great big bowel in the sky. Failure to do so will guarantee you remain where you currently reside— in bowel hell. BOWEL EQUALITY FOR ALL!

A Day in the Life—-

A Day in the life of someone with colitis or any IBD- Your autobiography.
1. Wakeup-actually woken up by uncontrollable urge to go to the bathroom– barely make it in time–well- sometimes.
2. Have to go 2-3 more times before breakfast.
3. Nausea / stomach cramps- “am I pregnant?” Dude– I doubt it.”
4. Try to decide what to eat for breakfast-that will give you the LEAST amount of gas and diarrhea. Can’t think of anything.
5. After eating a saltine- another trip to the bathroom. That’s 5-6 times before 9:00am.
6. Sit and stare at the tv— wonder-do I dare go to the mall today.
7. Sit on the couch– the end nearest to the bathroom. Have controllable gas– “What- wasn’t me-must have been the dog.” “Oh-we don’t have a dog? Must have be the parakeet.”
8.” Go to the mall? The ultimate bowel test! Hmmmmm- how much Imodium do I have?”
9. Ok— let’s see my check list– a. Imodium-the gallon size b. an extra pair of underwear -c.an extra- extra pair of underwear.
10. Get out map of every rest stop along the way and every bathroom at the mall.
11. Ooops— gotta go again— “where does all of this stuff come from? Looks like saltines– “Is that even possible?”
12. Mall- walk by food court- smell the aroma of the total crap there- just enough to trigger it–”everybody look out!”
13. Too freaked out to shop—-
14. “Am I gonna make it home before I have an accident-of either kind?.
15. Finally home safe home– time for a nap- in the bathroom- just in case.
16. Exhausted- stressed out and it’s not even noon yet.
17 Hmm-lunch– what can I have that will give me the LEAST amount of gas and diarrhea?”
18. Saltines again?
19. Dinner— “you mean I have to eat dinner?” How about saltine casserole?
20. Go to bed- wake up-do it all over again. Is this Ground Hog Day?
