IBS & IBD

Irritable Bowel Syndrome is not an Inflammatory Bowel *Disease. IBD is not a * disease at all.
IBD is just a term that represents all of the inflammatory bowel CONDITIONS- IBS-Colitis-UC
Crohn’s *Disease- Leaky Gut Syndrome & Diverticulitis. These are not diseases at all- they are manmade conditions- damage to the GI tissue. They all have one thing in common- inflammation.
So- just to clarify- IBD is not a condition itself & they are all the same condition- just different degrees of damage- different levels of inflammation to the GI tissue. Are 1st-2nd-3rd degree burns all different “diseases?” Just thought you might want to know.

Gas and Bloating

These are the 2 most common gastro-intestinal complaints and are present in most every inflammatory bowel condition. The causes of this are poor digestion and constipation. People will often cite lactose intolerance or wheat/gluten “allergies”. They are just improper-weak digestion and are completely correctable. Anyone who tells you differently just does not understand how the stomach works and how to fix it- which it can be -in all cases. A tip about that– all of you people out there who have trouble with those foods- I will make a side bet that your Blood Type is O. The quickest ways to deal with excessive gas is to use either peppermint oil or charcoal capsules. The 1st one helps “dissipate” the gas & the 2nd “sucks” it up.
This is only going to give you temporary results. I should also say that digestive enzyme supplements will sometimes also help-although they can weaken your own digestive process. The only way to permanently correct this is to take a probiotic and colostrum. If you are dairy “sensitive” you should find a dairy free version of each as otherwise you may find yourself with diarrhea-if you don’t already have it- which is the 2nd most common gastro-intestinal problem.
Lastly- the reason that constipation can cause gas is because as the waste is sitting in your colon waiting to be eliminated it begins to ferment and as the gas is blocked from passing through the bowel it becomes trapped-causing pain. Until you get this fixed the best thing to do is to blame the dog.

IBS and Bowel Cleansers

I just got off the phone with someone who has IBS. They were about to start taking some kind of Super Bowel Cleanser thing that they saw online. I get this 4-5 times a week from people who are desperately looking for answers to their misery. If you are reading this you are surely a member of that club. If you run across something like this late at night-googling – “cures for diarrhea or diets for colitis or help-I’m freaking out cause I can’t get out of the bathroom” – don’t do it! It will make you worse! I have a woman I am treating who used something called “Dual Action Cleanse” for many years- she says she become addicted to it. Of course she did- it totally blew out her intestines. Now I am in the process of rebuilding them-it’s a long haul. These products are the exact opposite of what you need. You do not need stuff that is going to clean you out-they do so by irritating your colon and making it go into spasm. Remember- You already have IRRITABLE Bowel Syndrome. I can tell you that as long as people buy into that I will have no problem with job security. I already have more than I can handle. I find I have to say this on this blog frequently–IF YOU HAVE ANY INFLAMMATORY BOWEL DISEASE- DO NOT TAKE ANY KIND OF BOWEL CLEANSER. If you know someone who is seeking help with this kind of stuff- tell them to read some of the posts on this blog 1st- it will save them lots of pain and suffering and likely save their colon.

How to Treat IBS: 7 Commonly-Prescribed Treatments That Do NOT Cure Irritable Bowel Syndrome

How to Treat IBS: 7 Commonly-Prescribed Treatments That Do NOT Cure Irritable Bowel SyndromeIrritable Bowel Syndrome, often referred to as IBS or colitis, is a gastrointestinal disorder, and the recommendations for how to treat IBS run the gamut.

Because it is a very common disease, with statistics showing that every one out of five adults suffer from IBS in the United States, there is a great deal of misinformation online about treatments for the condition.

The common symptoms of the disease include abdominal pain, bloated stomach, heart burn and abdominal cramps. Some patients may have constipation while others may have diarrhea, fever, bleeding and weight loss. IBS is a disease that causes a great deal of discomfort and life upset. If you have one or more of these symptoms, you’ll probably begin searching the Internet for cures and treatments for your condition. Most of the information that you will discover may help mitigate your symptoms but won’t cure the disease, even though the treatments are recommended as cures.

Here are 7 examples of commonly-prescribed treatments that you will discover as you research how to treat IBS that do not work to cure IBS:

1. Yoga: Yoga was practiced by the ancient sages of India. There are some specific yoga asanas to improve the digestion and to manage the symptoms like diarrhea, constipation, bloating and others. Yoga is a combination of physical and mental exercises. The exercises focus on deep breathing, de-stressing and restoring balance to all organs and systems of the human body. The yoga asanas for IBS include the forward bend, the abdominal twist, the gas-relieving pose and breathing exercises. While these practices may help alleviate some IBS symptoms, yoga is not a cure.

2. Acupuncture and acupressure: These are Chinese medicinal practices that involve treating diseases by pricking fine needles or apply pressure on specific points in the body. Both of these procedures are effective in treating many diseases. An acupuncturist can help in relaxing muscle spasms and improve bowel function. While these practices may help mitigate some IBS symptoms, acupuncture and acupressure are not cures.

3. Home remedies: Home remedies like taking ginger and asafoetida are commonly recommended for IBS. Ginger paste mixed with lemon juice and honey and taken after every meal is recommended to make sure the food you eat is digested well. Drinking gooseberry water and eating pomegranate seeds are other common home remedies recommended for how to treat IBS. While these practices may help alleviate some IBS symptoms, home remedies are not the cure.

4. Stress management: Stress is often listed as a primary cause of IBS. Therefore, the recommendation to manage stress is to indulge yourself in a hobby that you like. Exercise regularly. Go for brisk walking or vigorous swimming or jogging or cycling to reduce stress. Sleep well. Practice yoga. While these practices may help reduce some IBS symptoms, stress management is not the cure.

5. Hypnosis: A trained hypnotist helps you in relaxing and can help you learn how to relax tense abdominal muscles to avoid cramps. While these practices may help overcome some IBS symptoms, hypnosis is not the cure.

6. Diet: Avoiding processed foods, spicy foods, fried foods and acidic foods is a commonly recommended protocol for treating IBS, as is eating a diet rich in fiber. Actually, the best diet for IBS is one in which you eat low fiber foods that won’t aggravate the already-inflamed intestinal tissue. This means no raw fruits or vegetables, and no nuts, seeds, or corn until you get your IBS fixed. While these practices may help alleviate some IBS symptoms, a different diet is not the cure. Actually, when you’re cured of IBS, you can eat whatever you like.

7. Life style modifications: Typical modifications include no alcohol and smoking, drinking plenty of water, regular exercise, and getting plenty of sleep. While these are all generally good recommendations for enhancing your lifestyle and may alleviate some IBS symptoms, lifestyle modifications are not the cure.

Here’s the best way to treat your IBS — naturopathy. IBS is caused from antibiotics you have taken over your lifetime. These antibiotics have caused damage to the mucosal lining of your intestines. If you want to get rid of IBS permanently, the damaged mucosal lining must be rebuilt. Naturopathic treatment does wonders in rebuilding the mucosal lining and intestinal wall through ingesting natural nutritional compounds. Naturopathy also helps to reinoculate beneficial organisms to help rebuild your GI tract.

The above commonly-recommended treatment options may help you manage your IBS symptoms. However, rebuilding the mucosal lining of your intestines is the only cure for IBS that works and is how to treat IBS.

Lymphocytic Colitis

Don’t get hung up on the name. It is just another inflammatory bowel condition. The word lymph always freaks everyone out. In fact- this is one of the minimally “dangerous” IBD’s. The precursor to Lymphocytic Colitis is Microscopic Colitis. This refers to tiny holes in the intestinal walls and Lymphocytic Colitis is just when the holes are getting a little bigger- which w/o proper treatment- as with all IBD’s always will just keep getting worse. The next stop will be bigger holes = IBS. The only symptoms are loose stools- watery diarrhea. A colonoscopy will be considered normal and you will be sent home and told not to worry about it-pick up some Imodium.. Sure- it’s not their colon. Everyone with any IBD has passed through this stage. If you jump in quick-right now- you can stop this in it’s tracks- before it’s too late. Unfortunately most people wait until it’s too late to seek medical care. Don’t do that- pick up a good probiotic- not one with 10 zillion bacterial strains-but one that mimics the strains that are in breast milk- the original probiotic. So-hurry -either find a lactating woman and ask if she can help you out or go to a health food store and buy one from the refrigerated section- none of this ok at room temperature b/s. Ya- I know- breast milk is not cold– but also it is delivered directly and not sitting on a shelf somewhere. What does a woman do after she pumps some milk to be used later—-. Here is my protocol for both Microscopic and Lymphocytic Colitis- get some probiotics and swallow them.

5 Primary Symptoms of Colitis

Colitis masquerades by many names and the symptoms of colitis are no fun.  They include severe stomach pain, diarrhea, and constipation, to name a few. Colitis is a serious problem that causes the lining of the large intestine to be inflamed, swollen. These are the five most common symptoms of colitis.

The “Best” Diet for Irritable Bowel Syndrome

The "Best" Diet for Irritable Bowel SyndromeIs there a “best” diet for Irritable Bowel Syndrome? IBS (Irritable Bowel Syndrome) is a highly chronic condition which involves problems with your gastrointestinal tract. A number of symptoms are commonplace to the condition,  such as indigestion, constipation, diarrhea, abdominal pain, bloating, and gas.

Most information about IBS will tell you that a proper diet for Irritable Bowel Syndrome is key for curing any of the syndromes involving inflammation of the intestines.  However, you do not need to be on some extreme diet like the Specific Carbohydrate Diet or any other type of diet for the rest of your life.  IBS, IBD, colitis, Crohn’s, etc. is not about food at all.  It’s about the use of antibiotics that have damaged the lining of your intestines over the years.  Your diet and the food you eat have little to do with the causes and cures of these syndromes.

Just to be clear: there is NO diet for Irritable Bowel Syndrome that will heal or cure any form of IBS, nor is there one that will cause it.  IBS can be cured by rebuilding the GI tract’s mucosal tissue. However, in the meantime, you can manage the symptoms of your condition by not eating foods that will aggravate it.

As you think about your diet and what you eat, keep in mind these two rules for diet for Irritable Bowel Syndrome:

1. General diet: The rule is simple here — eat low fiber foods that won’t aggravate the already inflamed intestinal tissue.  Makes sense, right?  Why would you want to choose a high fiber diet that would further inflame your intestines?  That means no raw fruit; no raw vegetables; no nuts, seeds, or corn until you get your IBS fixed.

If you persist in eating these high fiber foods, you will exacerbate your condition, which will manifest itself with symptoms like diarrhea, abdominal pain, mucus and bloody stools, all of which make your condition worse.

You will want to change to a low fiber diet as an initial step in curing your IBS, even before taking any supplements.  By doing so, you can more accurately evaluate your treatment needs.

2. Use common sense:  If any other food bothers you when you eat it, just stop eating it for the time being. Once you have decided to move forward with healing your IBS,  you can return to eating whatever you want after that point. When you have IBS, colitis or Crohn’s Disease, the best way to know if there is a problem with a particular food is if you become bloated and get diarrhea when you eat that food.  If this happens, simply stop eating that food.

You cannot heal any Inflammatory Bowel Disease with any kind of diet — you can only slow down the destruction of your GI tract. Irritable Bowel Syndrome doesn’t have to be a lifelong condition that reduces your ability to work, attend social events and travel.  Proper diagnosis and treatment is essential.

Do yourself a favor – forget everything else you have read about diet for Irritable Bowel Syndrome and just follow these two simple rules to help you manage your IBS and then seek out a permanent cure.

Gateway Drugs & Bowel Intervention

Antibiotics in various forms open Pandora’s box that then lead to a myriad of gastro-intestinal problems. This then leads to the inevitable use of other drugs such as pentasa-lialda-prednisone-asacol- imuran-remicade ect-ect- ect. Once you go down this road there is (almost) no turning back. You know you are addicted when you are on many of these drugs at the same time- switching from one to the other and now NONE of them are working. Then– the pusher has you right where he wants you and you see him/her sharpening their knife. WHAT YOU NEED IS A BOWEL INTERVENTION-by someone who knows what the hell they are doing. Find yourself a 10 STEP BOWEL PROGRAM and finally surrender to the truth that- “I am powerless over my diarrhea-gas or bloating” and turn your colon over to a higher power-a properly trained holistic gastro-enterologist. Until then – take it one trip to the bathroom at time
