IBS Support: 5 Frequently Asked Questions about Irritable Bowel Syndrome

IBS Support: 5 Frequently Asked Questions about Irritable Bowel SyndromeI have been a holistic gastroenterologist for over 3 decades, and my line of work involves providing people with IBS support.

This has brought me into contact with many clients who ask a lot of questions out of curiosity about their condition. There were some queries that kept recurring.

So, I decided to come up with a collection of questions that are frequently asked as far as my IBS support practice is concerned.

Q: Can IBS be classified as an Auto-Immune Disease?

A: Inflammatory Bowel Disease can certainly not be classified as an auto-immune disease because it is definitely not a disease at all. When one looks at it critically, you will note that the immune system does not attack the colon in IBS, Colitis, Ulcerative Colitis, or Crohn’s disease. On the contrary, your immune system does its job by trying to help you.

A good example is if I cut my finger. The immune system will take charge of the situation and it works by a means referred to as “compliment.” This is an old-school term that explains how the immune system goes about doing its work. The immune system usually becomes active locally and it acts by preventing the finger from getting infected. As much as it is active in this process, I cannot blame my immunity system for my cut finger. The same concept can be applied to the colon. In as much as the immune system becomes active, it cannot be held responsible for damaging the colon lining. On the contrary, it tries to act to prevent infection while at the same time trying to facilitate the healing process. Yet we still prescribe some drugs to help suppress the immune system.

Q. Can IBS be caused by NSAIDS?

A. One can easily get NSAIDS or non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs over the counter. There are some, like aspirin and ibuprofen, which do not need a prescription. These are not known to cause IBS directly. They may cause stomach upsets due to their acidity but they are not responsible for conditions like IBD. However, they may worsen an already existing situation, especially before antibiotics have been used. Because of this, the NSAID may be able to penetrate the porous mucosal lining and end up irritating the wall of the GI tract.

Q. Is IBD hereditary?

This is not exactly the case. There may be some genetic tendencies for some body systems to develop a weakness towards a particular disease. As far as the gastro-intestinal problems are concerned, people do not get IBD without there being other underlying factors. What does “run in the family” are people who frequently use antibiotics. This environmental factor may affect the genetic tendencies and increase the chances of getting Crohn’s disease or IBS.

Q. Some of my doctors are recommending the use of colonics as a means of increasing my fiber. Is that an idea worth taking up?

A. This is not recommended because it will only worsen the situation. Considering the colon lining is already inflamed, it is not a good idea to worsen this by dragging roughage over it. It is, however, a good idea to eat a diet that is low in fiber.

Q. Why is it hard for some Naturopaths to fix leaky gut syndrome?

A. Naturopaths are paths are good at treating most general problems. Problems that affect the colon are very complex and thus require Naturopaths who specialize in them. Unfortunately, most of them shy away from this condition. I have been dealing with this for 30 plus years to the point of developing my own Gastro-enterology method.

Probiotics for IBS: 10 Proven Tips for Effective Treatment for IBS with Probiotics

Probiotics for IBS: 10 Proven Tips for Effective Treatment for IBS with Probiotics You may have heard that you should be taking probiotics for IBS (Irritable Bowel Syndrome).

What are they, anyhow? Probiotics are microorganisms like as bacteria or yeast that are available in supplements and foods. Amazingly enough, our digestive system is home to more than 500 species of bacteria, all of which help keep out intestines healthy and help with food digestion and regulate a healthy immune system.

When the balance of healthy bacteria is upset in the GI tract, like after an infection or ingestion of antibiotics, the lining of the intestines becomes damaged. Introducing new organisms, like those found in probotics, helps restore that imbalance and improves the integrity of the intestinal lining.

Probiotics are a very important tool in treating any gastrointestinal disorder, like acid reflux, gas, bloating, indigestion, diarrhea, IBS, colitis, Crohn’s Disease, and Leaky Gut Syndrome.

In order to get the maximum benefits of probiotics for IBS, there are 10 basic rules to follow when using probiotics for treatment of your Irritable Bowel Disease:

1. Conditions: Do take probiotics if you have ANY inflammatory bowel condition.

2. Refrigeration: Ensure that each probiotic is kept refrigerated. Lack of refrigeration will render them ineffective.

3. Colostrum: Always take probiotics for IBS with colostrum. Otherwise, they will not work properly.

4. Multiple bacterial strains: Do make sure that each probiotic contains multiple strains of bacteria.

5. Adequate dosage: Make sure that you ingest an adequate amount of the probiotic, whether in capsules or powder. Failing to do so is one of the biggest mistakes that people make. You don’t need to pay much attention to the “potency” or “number of bacterial units.” A typical dosage includes at least 2 capsules taken twice a day. There’s no need to worry about an overdose — that’s not possible. Find a good probiotic and take a bunch of it.

6. Post-antibiotic treatment: Always take probiotics immediately after finishing any antibiotics.

7. Yogurt myth: IBD cannot be reversed by eating lots of yogurt. While yogurt’s live bacteria may help alleviate some of your irritable bowel syndrome conditions, it is not a comprehensive treatment for IBS.

8. Food: Do not take probiotics with food. You should take them either 30 minutes prior to eating or one hour after eating.

9. Candida myth: The specialized yeast probiotic saccharomyces boulardii will NOT give you Candida — that is simply a myth. Actually, this yeast bacteria has the opposite effect — it will help eradicate Candida, as well as stop your diarrhea in its tracks.

10. Explaining your recovery: Don’t bother to try and explain to your physician how you made a complete recovery from IBS. S/he won’t understand and will attribute your recovery from IBS to a “miracle.” Well, in a way, it kinda is!

If you follow these tips for taking probiotics for IBS, you WILL get well, and if you don’t follow them, you won’t.

Aloe Vera Juice for Inflammatory Bowel Conditions

Everybody knows that aloe vera juice is good for healing skin problems- like cuts and burns. Well this goes for the skin on the inside of your body as well as outside. With any inflammatory bowel condition-such as Irritable Bowel Syndrome-the skin that is irritated—– is the skin that lines the inside of your gastro-intestinal tract all the way through from the mouth-esophagus-stomach-small and large-intestine-which is your colon.
Think of it this way— you go to the beach and you get a sunburn. Why? Because you did not use any sunscreen-leaving the skin exposed with no protection from the harsh sun—- just like your colon having no mucosal lining to protect it from harsh stomach acids. We might call this a 1st degree burn. When you have any IBD-what you have is a sunburn-just on the skin inside your GI tract. We might call this an internal 1st degree burn-IBS. Now back to the beach-we ignore our body’s signals and we stay out in the sun- but still no sunscreen. Now our skin gets even more burnt and we start to get blisters-perhaps we can call this 2nd degree burns. Turning inside again-if we go on w/o any internal “sunscreen” and let the digestive acids keep splashing over the GI Tract (like the sun) we start to develop blisters internally-2nd degree burns–we call this colitis. If we still “stay in the sun”-and don’t slap on the “sunscreen” there will be even more damage to the external as well as internal skin = 3rd-4th degree burns= UC & crohn’s disease. The same goes for upper GI conditions like acid reflux-heartburn-GERD— all just sun/acid burns. What they all have in common is no sunscreen / mucosal lining-no protection= 1st-2nd-3rd -4th degree burns. Ok—-enough of that – let’s get back to the original subject–aloe vera.
This stuff works great for rapid healing of all kinds of cuts-burns-abrasions inside & out. So just like putting it on the surface skin-your back-kneck-legs— also drinking aloe vera will speed up the healing of the burns inside your GI tract–anywhere from top to bottom. A word to the wise— next time you go to the beach–load up on the sunscreen——the same goes for the internal environment.
I will leave it up to you to figure out what the internal sunscreen is—- it’s written all over this blog. Can you figure it out? If you can-then you can figure your way out of any inflammatory bowel condition. Just remember this— anything that is good or bad for the skin on the outside of your body is the same for the skin on the inside of your body. 30 years ago I sat down and thought this through—all the way and that’s when I figured out how to fix any inflammatory bowel “disease.” Is a sunburn a disease? So— if you have any of these conditions- I have given you all you need to figure it out.The last ingredient is your participation— take the time to read the posts on this blog— it’s all there—- figure it out. What’s that you say- you don’t have the time? Hmmmmmmm

What Is a Leaky Gut?

What Is a Leaky Gut?If you’ve been diagnosed with Leaky Gut Syndrome, you may be wondering, “What is a Leaky Gut, and how can I have one?”

There is much debate in the traditional medical community about the causes for Leaky Gut Syndrome.  However, there is one thing can’t be denied — our digestive systems no longer work the way that nature intended them to work.  Why?  Because our diets and our lifestyles have merged in a way that’s not healthy.  The result?   A diagnosis of Leaky Gut Syndrome or one of many other bowel disorders like colitis, Irritable Bowel Disease, diverticulitis, or Crohn’s Disease.

But what exactly is Leaky Gut Syndrome and what’s the best way to treat it?

The small intestine, the largest organ in your body, is where two-thirds of your immune system lies. The small intestine is continuously activated when it samples molecules passing through the intestinal lining.  Leaky Gut Syndrome refers to “holes” that have developed in the intestinal lining. These holes make the intestine more permeable than it should be.  Consequently, toxins, waste materials, and other substances can “leak” out into the rest of the body.

This breakdown of the mucosal lining is caused by taking certain medications, like antibiotics, that destroy the lining.  Once the lining is destroyed, that leaves the tender skin, fat and muscle that comprise the intestinal wall exposed to digestive acids.  These digestive acids cause inflammation and create “holes” in the intestines.  This will then trigger gastrointestinal and other problems that present with symptoms like abdominal bloating, fatigue, skin rashes, excessive gas and cramps, joint pain, and food sensitivities.

Once it has started, the “eating” of your GI tract does not stop, nor does it go away on its own. If left untreated, the acids will eventually destroy the whole colon, and then you will then have Crohn’s Disease, where you essentially have no remaining colon.  If you seek traditional medical treatment at this stage, your physician will more than likely recommend surgery to remove your colon.

Fortunately, Leaky Gut Syndrome and related irritable bowel diseases can all be reversed and fixed without drugs or surgery. A Naturopath experienced in treating Inflammatory Bowel Disease will use natural medicines to “patch up” those “holes” and rebuild the mucosal lining.  Once you’re cured, you will have no ongoing maintenance such as drugs, therapy, nutritional supplements, or dietary or lifestyle restrictions.

Don’t let Leaky Gut Syndrome destroy your colon and your life.  No longer ask, “What is a Leaky Gut?” but instead ask, “How can I cure Leaky Gut?”, and you’ll discover the answer in naturopathy.

Another Quick Hitter

Is Inflammatory Bowel “Disease” an auto-immune “disease?” You mean our immune system just decided to attack our colon? Hmmm- why would the immune system do that? And why did it just start doing that in the 2nd part of the last century if it is genetic-people didn’t get crohn’s back then. You see folks- this is a knee jerk scientific reaction. Ok-check this out— the intestines are inflamed-and the immune system is very active in that area— sooo- therefore it must be the immune system doing it?” Wrong—- the immune system is active there-because it is TRYING TO HELP YOU-YOU HAVE AN INJURY-IT DOES NOT WANT YOU TO GET INFECTED – IT IS TRYING TO HEAL YOU. Ok- think of it this way– I cut my finger— the immune system jumps into action- just like the fire department and rushes to the location to put out the “fire”=inflammation. Thanks god for the immune system. Now–hmmm- did the immune system cut my finger?
Ok- today’s assignment- go on google- wikipedia- the library-and find medical research that definitively-categorically determines that there is SCIENTIFIC proof that any IBD- IBS-COLITIS-ULCERATIVE COLITIS-CROHN’S is an auto-immune disease. I will save you the time and effort- it does not exist. It ALWAYS says- “it is believed that- it is thought that- it is theorized that.” BTW-who cares- they are looking at the wrong end of the stick-just get it fixed-let the other guys figure what causes it. Which would you rather know- the cause or the CURE?

A Quick Hitter

How does the colon get inflamed-irritated? The digestive acids in the stomach and small intestines hitch a ride on the food as it is being digested and eventually becomes – stool and as it passes by-it “burns” the tissue—- but only of the people who do not have a sufficient mucosal lining. That’s what separates the “haves”-as in have IBS and the “have nots”. Is the stool acidic enough to irritate tissue-hmmm-what happens when your beautiful baby has a messy diaper that does not get changed right away—- or how about you— that time you were in a hurry in the bathroom and just did not take care of business completely-come on-be honest you’ve all done that at least once. Is it really that simple? Yes it is.

Cure

Cure— now there’s a word that stirs up a lot of controversy- emotions- anger – debate. That’s a good thing-gets people talking. When it comes to Inflammatory Bowel “Disease”-people sometimes get furious with me when I say I CAN CURE IBD. Some people are just cut and dry- with their heels dug in- entrenched-”There is no cure for IBS-Colitis-UC-Crohns-ect!” Others are not so closed minded- they say “Tell me more- maybe-just maybe – what do I have to lose-tell me more.” The 1st group has developed a lock tight belief system that will filter out any inkling that there just may be a remedy-a cure- a way out- “THERE IS NO CURE FOR IBD -There is no scientific evidence!-There is no hope!” They are doomed— to keep having the same experience over and over. These people are- #1- the true believers who never question “authority”- their doctor-who is someone who offers you only drugs or surgery and no hope & #2-who get hung up on words-”the definition of CURE is—- blah – blah – blah- so therefore there is no cure!” Wow man-calm down. Believe it or not-there are lots of people out there who you don’t know- who don’t hang out at gastro-enterologist’s offices-who you never hear about-who just travel in a different crowd. It is arrogant & self limiting to say there is no cure for—ANYTHING – who the hell are you? It’s a big world out there!
Check this out– the people who hang out with me– who “knocked on my door”-who have a healthy-open mind-who asked questions-who are humble- not self defeatedly arrogant-who said- “I don’t care what others say- I am going to explore every possible avenue- I want out of this suffering!”-Have had a different experience. Instead of sitting on the couch insisting “there is no cure-there is no cure-ect- ect.” Ok—— do your thing.I always say-in this blog– ask questions of your doctor- be a pain in the ass- drill em-drill me-drain them of everything they know-then do the same to the next guy–everybody you can find-be an advocate for yourself-be on a mission – get off your butt.
Let’s get to the gist of this post— CURED- HEALED in REMISSION – whatever “hot” terms you want to use— I could care less- the people who come to me-with every kind of inflammatory bowel condition & symptom-diarrhea-bleeding-mucus-pain-bloating- you name it- don’t have that suffering after being treated by me-it’s gone. After 3-4-5 months they have no symptoms-no drugs no surgery & no dietary or lifestyle restrictions. Now-here come all of the aspersions- the negative remarks– “They are NOT- cannot be healed- cured- there is no cure for IBD!” Dude-why don’t you even ask me how I do it before trashing me-THEN trash me- but I bet you won’t when I tell you how.
Ok- what WORD do you want to use when people go 3-5-10-20 years with no symptoms- no restrictions- no maintenance? Well- maybe they aren’t CURED but these people DON’T CARE about words-they have moved on. There are hundreds & likely 1000′s who have gotten on with their life-they are called the “early adopters”-the ones who said-”what the hell-I’ll give it a shot.” Here’s a good word for you-they are HAPPY. What group are you in?
THERE IS A ____ FOR IBD! Fill in the space with YOUR favorite WORD.
